Teeth are one of the most important parts of our body that need regular care. Since our mouth and teeth can become a primary source of bacteria in the body very quickly, it is very important to start taking care of a baby’s teeth in her early days. However, taking care of a baby’s teeth does not necessarily imply using toothpaste in the early days of her life. The habit of regular cleaning the mouth of your baby will go a long way in establishing a cleaning routine in her life and later, when toddler, the baby will get used to of brushing teeth and hence will not throw tantrums, kids usually do when asked for brushing teeth. So, in all respects, it is best to start cleaning baby’s mouth and teeth in her early days. The question that arises here is when and how to clean your little baby’s mouth. Here, we present you a brief guideline about the same.
When to start cleaning mouth?
Ideally you should start cleaning your baby’s mouth and gums even before the teeth appear. For this, simply take a clean and wet washcloth and wrap it around your index finger. Then gently clean your baby’s gums with this cloth. You need not apply any kind of toothpaste. Just massage the gums of your baby with this cloth and do not worry about rinsing his/her mouth. When you start this early habit of cleaning gums of your baby, it ensures that no trace of bacteria remains in her mouth and the baby gets used to of cleaning the mouth.
How to clean teeth once teeth begin to appear?
Once first tooth emerges in your baby’s mouth, switch the wash cloth with a good quality baby brush. Take a soft brush and a long grip which you can comfortably hold. Now take a very small amount of baby toothpaste, as little as that of a grain size and massage it around your baby’s tooth. Do not worry about rinsing her mouth since you have applied very little amount of paste. It is important to take very little amount of toothpaste because if you take more than required amount of paste than it is possible that white spots appear on your baby’s teeth in the later stages. So it’s better to take very little amount of paste initially.
How to motivate child to brush once she learns to handle the brush?
Often children become fussy once they are grown up enough to brush their teeth themselves. The best way to motivate the toddlers for brushing the teeth is to explain them again and again about the ill effects the germs can induce and show them the pictures on germs. That really makes them understand the importance of brushing. Besides, make this activity fun by brushing your teeth with them and singing rhymes related to brushing. You will find many poems which relate to cleaning of teeth and personal hygiene.
Get innovative and compose your own poems about brushing and make the activity fun and inculcate the habit of hygienic practices in your child in her early days.
